In the southeastern DRC, in the mining areas of Lualaba, copper and cobalt mining is fueling the global energy transition, but it is also causing serious local concerns. In Fungurume, a recent report by the Environmental Investigation Agency, in collaboration with PremiCongo, calls into question the activities of Tenke Fungurume Mining (TFM), highlighting in particular sulfur dioxide emissions from the “30K” plant.

Drawing on more than 1,200 medical records, the investigation highlights a worrying decline in air quality and a rise in health issues among local residents: respiratory problems, bleeding, and serious complications among children and pregnant women.

This episode explores the health, social, and environmental consequences of mining, while examining the fragile balance between industrial profits and the failure to comply with environmental standards.
