Since 2023, a strange war has been raging between Washington and Beijing. At the time, President Joe Biden decided to restrict exports of the most advanced microchips, particularly those that could be used to develop artificial intelligence, in order to limit China’s technological progress.

Beijing did not hesitate to retaliate, as the Chinese government decided to restrict exports of two rare metals, including germanium. And in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, since 2024, a Congolese company, Société du Terril de Lubumbashi, a wholly owned subsidiary of Gécamines, has been exporting germanium concentrate processed locally in Katanga. It has entered into a partnership with Umicore, a Belgian firm. A partnership that the United States had welcomed.

Can the country become an alternative source in the global supply of germanium? The answer can be found in this new podcast from Actualité.cd in collaboration with Resource Matters.
